    Contributions vs growth

Gold is the projected balance; navy is the money you actually paid in. The gap between them is compounding.

    Why the split matters

Time does more work than timing

In most long-horizon projections, growth overtakes contributions somewhere between year twelve and year twenty. Starting earlier moves that crossover forward far more reliably than chasing a higher return.

    Fees compound too

A 1% annual fee is roughly a 1% lower return here. Run the calculator twice, once at your gross expected return and once a point lower, to see the lifetime cost.

    This is nominal, not real

The balance is in future dollars. To see what it buys, run the same horizon through the inflation impact calculator.
